How to Select the Right Sink

An important part of every kitchen is the sink. If you are replacing or installing new countertops, now is the best time to also consider the sink. This hard-working element sees a lot of use and the right sink can make your time in the kitchen more enjoyable.

Mounting Styles

Sinks are available in three basic mounting styles.

1. Drop-In or Top Mount

This easy-to-install sink literally drops into the opening of the countertop. There is a lip or rim around the perimeter of the sink which lays on the countertop and holds the sink in place. This mounting style is used with laminate countertops.

2. Under Mount

These sinks are designed to be installed under the countertop. This mounting style is used with solid surface, stone, or wood countertops where the exposed edge is of the same finished material. Under-mount sink styles are popular for their clean aesthetic and ease of maintenance.

3. Apron Front

More commonly known as a “farmhouse” sink, an apron front sink features a deep basin and exposed front. They are available in drop-in or under mount. This style complements traditional or more casual decor and will require a different cabinetry below it.
